Petty Officer Roddy was most recently assigned to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit in Norfolk, Va., where he resided with his family. He was deployed to Iraq in June 2006. On September 16, 2006 he was killed in the Al Anbar province, Iraq by a bomb that detonated as he approached it to dismantle it.
