Barry Bikes Across the USA

Joe CockrellMar 29, 2019

When Barry heard the news that EODCS Scott Dayton was killed in action in Syria, it hit very close to home. Scott’s teammate who was fighting alongside him that fateful day, is the son of Barry’s close friend and brother who he’s known since he was 7 years old.

Although he did not know Senior Chief Dayton personally, Barry, a retired US Navy Command Master Chief, knew the impact of his service and sacrifice. Our great nation had lost not only a warrior, leader and mentor, but also a friend, brother, husband, and father. He knew he had to make sure that Scott, and all other warriors who have served our country bravely were never for-gotten.

While visiting Washington D.C. on Independence Day in 2018, Barry committed himself to honor the service and sacrifices made by EODCS Scott Dayton and his fellow comrades in Navy EOD. He would do so by taking part in a bike ride across the United States, representing and raising funds for Navy Special Operations Foundation (NSOF); A charity exclusively serving the Navy EOD and Diver Communities.

After months of training, Barry will embark on his journey by dipping his rear wheel into the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, CA on April 1st, 2019. With several stops along the way in Fredericksburg and Austin, TX, Gulf Shores, AL, and Eglin, FL, he plans to conclude his ride in St. Augustine FL. Upon arrival, Barry will ceremoniously dip his front wheel into the Atlantic Ocean completing his coast to coast ride.

This trip will take 46 days, and cover more than 3,000 miles across 8 states - by far the longest cycling trip Barry has ever been on.

"I have a desire to challenge myself in a way to remember and raise awareness made by those who have worn the cloth of our nation. We remember their Honor, Courage, and Commitment to protect life, preserve liberty, and pursue those who threaten it."
